Brothers Frederick and Louis Ruechkeim made the trek from Germany to America in 1873, finally settling down in Chicago. They began to sell their sticky sweet molasses covered popcorn with peanuts. It’s unclear whether it was from a street cart, a storefront, or at the Chicago World’s Fair where this delectable concoction took off, but either way, we’re happy about it!
Of course popcorn itself, and even sweet popcorn, wasn’t unheard of at that time. Kettle corn had been around for a while, and it has even been said that popcorn was eaten like cereal with milk and sugar!
We think we’ll just stick to caramel popcorn for now!
