A Spoonful of Sugar:

December 31, 2020 By The Chocolate Truffle

Why a Little Sweetness Goes a Long Way

We may be called the Chocolate Truffle but our repertoire expands far beyond the chocolatey goodness of a creamy truffle. We’ve taken to creating our own hard candies, which involves boiling sugar at certain temperatures to create some of our favorite nostalgic classics. Some of New England’s greatest charm comes from that trip to the candy shop with barrels of old fashioned penny candy at your fingertips. Nowadays, a lot of it is pre-packaged and sold in bulk, losing some of that original charm, but our hard candies are extra special, and made by us! We work hard to bring back that nostalgia with every piece of candy we make! Come give it a try!

Now, sometimes we reach for something sweet when we feel sad. Doctors used to hand out lollipops at the office. And one Mary Poppins sang about a spoonful of sugar helping the medicine go down. But why is it that a sweet treat always seems to do the trick? Does a spoonful of sugar really make the medicine go down?

We know that ancient practices of medicine often included naturally sweet ingredients such as honey, or used familiar ingredients like the marshmallow plant. The introduction of lozenges and throat soothers often had a sweet flavor to hide the natural ingredients and make it more palatable. But it’s interesting to note that sugar might actually do more than just mask some unlovable flavors.

Studies have shown that before receiving a normally painful injection, infants who were given a small amount of sugar solution to taste, cried less and seemed to feel less pain. It isn’t just the sugary goodness that distracted the babies, it had a scientific explanation! When the babies tasted the sugar, the brain reacted by producing endorphins which naturally relieve pain in the body. Less pain means less tears!

We might not be given a candy at the doctor’s office anymore, but it does go to show that when we need a little pick-me-up we often reach for something sweet! We have a candy or a truffle for everyone! And we’ve made it even easier to get your hands on some Chocolate Truffle sweets! We now offer in-store purchasing, curbside pick-up, and online ordering! Make yourself comfortable and stop by the Chocolate Truffle for a sweet treat pick-me-up!
