This past year has brought a lot of interesting changes in our lives big and small, but one of the great things that came out of this year was the innovative treats that flooded social media. But where did hot chocolate even come from? We’ve touched on the origin of chocolate before but hot chocolate has a special place in its history. The Mayans were the first to introduce the idea of hot chocolate, but it wasn’t the sweet sugary treat we know today. The Mayans made a drink from ground cocoa seeds, water, cornmeal and chili peppers. Often served cold, this chocolate drink made its way over to Europe where it stayed true to its origins for a little while. Over time, the chili peppers were removed, the drink was sweetened and served hot. As news of this treat spread, its popularity grew and variations were created. Milk was introduced to the recipe, and drinking chocolate truly became a decadent treat!
